Mexico is the perfect place to travel as a family, and Rutopía knows it. Among the multitude of landscapes and ecosystems that spread throughout the territory, a trip through this country is also the opportunity to learn  about the true Mexican culture, traditions and biodiversity. A wonderful example of this occurs in the south of Mexico, in the Yucatán Peninsula, a destination full of fun and active learning activities that can be easily adapted to different family plans.

This state has it all: cenotes, a good number of archaeological sites where you can learn about the Mayan civilization in depth, cities that combine the pre-Hispanic and colonial past and a unique culinary tradition in the world.

Having said that, we have selected three activities that will inspire any traveler to choose Yucatan for the best vacation of their life.

At Rutopía we make authentic, tailor-made and hassle-free trips.

Playa del Carmen

The first site we propose is located in the heart of the Mayan Riviera. Here families can enjoy not only the turquoise sea and calm waves of the Caribbean, but also a good number of options such as: visit the archaeological site of Playa del Carmen, taste typical dishes of the region, learn scuba diving and even explore the region in depth with small trips, all from the comfort of a boutique hotel.

On the other hand, to make this trip authentic, Rutopía offers a series of unique activities ranging from a walk through Chemuyil, cycling tours through the jungle ruins of Cobá, where the Nohoch Mul pyramid is located, catalogued as the largest pyramidal base of the Peninsula or even diving in cenotes with transparent water and observing spider monkeys in the middle of the jungle.

Isla Holbox

From Playa del Carmen the tour continues to the spectacular turquoise waters, white sand and calm sea of Holbox Island. An exceptional place, whose streets are made of sand, where families can contemplate some of the best sunsets and sunrises in the Caribbean.

Here you can go biking or horseback riding in front of the sea, there are also mangrove tours by kayak where you can see crocodiles in their natural habitat as well as endemic birds, pink flamingos and whale sharks.

To end a day full of adventures, nothing like making a stop at Punta Cocos where at night, under a blanket of stars, the whole family can witness the phenomenon of the sea’s bioluminescence.

Explore Holbox Island in bicycle and enjoy the dreamlike landscapes that offer you

Playa El Cuyo

Finally we will head to El Cuyo a picturesque fishing port, located in the Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, which is home to turtles and countless birds including the pink flamingo. In this destination there are opportunities to ride ATVs or golf carts and even to learn how to ride paddle boards, boat rides on the Rio Lagartos to spot manta rays and dolphins. While the kids play on the beach, adults can get a massage and even take a meditation class in front of the Caribbean Sea.

Less than two hours from El Cuyo are located Las Coloradas; pink lagoons that provide salt to almost the entire national territory. On this site, families can learn about the history of this great salt factory accompanied by a local guide.
