Imagine live -for a few days- in the middle of the Lacandon Jungle in the middle of nature, under the treetops, among monkeys and birds you have never seen before, and an infinite blue sky. At Rutopia, we can make this trip to the true heart of the jungle a reality.
But first, let’s start at the beginning; Mexico has at least ten types of ecosystems, of which six are terrestrial, and at least 29% are made up of the scrub moors that can be seen in the north. In contrast to our mighty desert, in the south, we have ecosystems characterized by a multitude of forests and different types of jungles; green trees everywhere you look.
Regarding the jungle, its dry version occupies approximately 11.7% of the national surface and is characterized by its low humidity, while the humid jungle has a warm and humid climate with abundant rainfall all year round. Animal and plant species vary according to the region, but this landscape alone contains at least 9% of the species found in Mexico.
Having said all this, if you want to know this type of landscape, the best state to do it in Chiapas, which has both types of jungle and two types of flora and fauna depending on the proximity to the Pacific or the Caribbean.
What are you waiting for to visit the Lacandon Jungle?
This enormous jungle is one of the reasons why Mexico is considered a megadiverse country. And although it is one of the most diverse ecosystems, it is also one of the most vulnerable, which is why every trip to this site must be sustainable and must be focused on helping the local people. There are two biosphere reserves, two natural monuments, and three flora and fauna protection areas for its conservation. These protected areas cover approximately 400,000 hectares.
The Lacandon Jungle and its Lacandon people
The Lacandon Maya people inhabit the Lacandon region. In former times this community had a ceremonial center on the Lacan-tun island, which means big stone. They are rebellious people who, for centuries, were able to resist the pressure of the colony and various governments to become Christianized and preserve their most authentic rites. For them, the Lacandona is their jungle, and they could not be more right.
The Lacandon jungle has an area of more than 1.5 million hectares and is located on the banks of the Usumacinta River. It is home to 114 species of mammals, 345 species of birds, and 87 species of reptiles. Some of these species are endemic; they are only found in this place. In addition, 3400 species of plants grow here, representing 13% of the vegetation in Mexico.
