On this day, you will get to know the handicraft village of Teotitlán very closely; from its diverse nature around the lake, to its traditional handicrafts and the secrets of its production (weaving and dyeing of natural colors). You will start at the town’s dam at the foot of the imposing mountains of the Sierra Norte, where sunrise is a spectacular time for bird watching.
You will hike for approximately 3 hours to the top of the nearest mountain, where you will have a view of the entire eastern valley of Oaxaca. Along the way, you will learn about the flora and fauna from the local guide who will accompany you throughout the experience.
If the hike has worked up an appetite, a local family will welcome you into their home with open arms for a meal of traditional dishes. They will then show you the authentic craftsmanship that has been in the family for more than 5 generations for the elaboration of carpets; true weavers at heart! You will learn how the wool is cleaned, prepared and dyed using natural materials such as plants, insects, leaves and lime to create a rainbow of brilliant colors. Finally, you will understand how a treadle loom, a traditional wooden “machine” used to weave the yarns, works.
Finally, with your mind full of color, you will visit the village and begin your return to Oaxaca.
