Santiago de Anaya

The Valley of Mezquital, in Hidalgo, was for hundreds of years one of the most recondite and enigmatic places in Mexico. The indigenous Hñahñus (Otomies) who live here, have adapted to life in this arid and beautiful ecosystem, today famous for its pulque and exotic gastronomy. The desert offers a wide variety of cacti and flowers that can be seen while touring our lands. Here you can also find the legendary caves that were occupied by Pancho Villa during the Revolution.

We, the hosts, are a group of Hñahñus guides who seek to make our region known through bio-cultural tourism. Carlos is a young native from Gonzalez Ortega passionate about nature and adventure sports. He or Roman will be with you to make sure that your experience can be the best possible.

A "Hnahnu" Experience

I took a trip with Rutopia in Santiago de Anaya among the hnahnu community without having any expectation and I was incredibly amazed! In just a couple of days I learned a lot about the people and their traditions, I visited an ancient cave, tried local food and made traditional artwork. I jumped into the unknown but Rutopia’s team was very helpful before I took my trip, and I felt super lucky to be welcomed that warmly and openly by my guides on spot. This was one the best human experience I ever had!

Thank you for sharing your traditions

My favourite activity were the workshops with the community and learning about all the uses of the plant maguey. It was my favourite because it was totally new to me. Muchas gracias por todo 🙂 It was amazing and I feel honoured to have been able to discover and share your culture, traditions and land. I will remember this trip forever!
